- INTRODUCTION
-
-
- DISKDUPE CAN DO IT!
-
- Thank you for trying DiskDupe. DiskDupe is the best program to automate your
- disk duplicating needs. DiskDupe can duplicate disks amazingly fast and
- without any fuss. You won't waste any more time with slow, cumbersome DOS
- commands.
-
-
- FAST AND EASY
-
- To duplicate disks, insert the master disk in your floppy drive and let
- DiskDupe read it into your computer's RAM memory and, if necessary, onto your
- hard disk. DiskDupe can then make as many duplicates as you want without
- having to re-read the master disk.
-
- DiskDupe uses advanced DMA and multi-tasking techniques to duplicate 62, 5"
- or 31, 3" disks per hour, complete with full formatting and verification. If
- your master disk is less than full, DiskDupe will run even faster.
-
- If you want to protect your master disk, DiskDupe lets you store its image on
- your hard disk. Then later, when your master disk is safely put away, you can
- use the image to make more duplicates.
-
- If you have lots of master disks that you need to make just a few duplicates
- of, DiskDupe's RELAY feature makes it easy. Simply put write protect tabs on
- all of your master disks. Then place your blank disks behind each master.
- DiskDupe will duplicate each write-protected master to all of the disks
- behind it that are not write-protected.
-
-
- MORE SPEED
-
- For more speed, DiskDupe lets you format disks ahead of time. Now you don't
- have to wait for that master disk to arrive to get started. Format 200, 5"
- disks today, or 100, 3" disks, get the master disk at 4, tomorrow, and by 5,
- you'll be out the door! If you have two similar disk drives, DiskDupe can
- even save you the time it takes to change disks by using a Standby Drive.
-

- INSTALLATION
-
-
- HARD DISK INSTALLATION
-
- To install DiskDupe on your hard disk, copy all the files from the program
- disk into a subdirectory on your hard disk. To do this, follow these
- instructions:
-
- 1. Boot up your computer as usual until a C> prompt appears.
-
- 2. Type: MD \DISKDUPE and press <ENTER>.
-
- 3. Type: CD \DISKDUPE and press <ENTER>.
-
- 4. Insert the DiskDupe disk in the A: drive and type: COPY A:*.*
- <ENTER>.
-
- ADVANCED USERS: DiskDupe will search your PATH for its data files. This means
- that you can place the \DISKDUPE subdirectory in your PATH so that you do not
- need to change to the \DISKDUPE subdirectory every time you want to run
- DiskDupe.
-
-
- FLOPPY DISK INSTALLATION
-
- DiskDupe works better in conjunction with a hard disk. If you don't have a
- hard disk you need 640k RAM memory in your computer. You will only be able to
- copy 360k disks.
-
- If you need to use DiskDupe on a floppy disk, you will need to copy the
- DiskDupe files to a blank formatted disk and then start DiskDupe and erase
- the temporary file name. To do this, follow the instructions below:
-
- 1. Format a blank disk. See your DOS manual for instructions on how to do
- this.
-
- 2. Place the original DiskDupe disk in the B: drive and put your blank
- formatted disk in the A: drive and type COPY B:DISKDUPE.* A: and press
- <ENTER>.
-
- 3. Start DiskDupe by typing DISKDUPE and pressing <ENTER>.
-
- 4. Pull down the Options menu by first pressing <ESC> and then pressing O and
- <ENTER>. Select the Temp File option by typing T and pressing <ENTER>. Keep
- pressing the <DEL> key to erase the Temp File name. Press the <ENTER> key to
- save the changes and then quit DiskDupe by selecting QUIT and press <ENTER>.
-
-
- CONFIGURATION
-
- Now that DiskDupe is installed, you need to tell it what type of disk drives
- your computer has. This is done in the Setup menu. To change the disk drive
- types, follow the instructions below:
-
- 1. Start DiskDupe by typing CD \DISKDUPE and pressing <ENTER>. Then type
- DISKDUPE and press <ENTER>.
-
- 2. Press the <RIGHT> arrow key until the menu cursor is over the SETUP choice
- and press <ENTER>.
-
- 3. Choose the disk drive you want to change by using the <UP> and
- <DOWN> arrow keys and then pressing <ENTER>. A list of all
- available drive types will appear. Use the <UP> and <DOWN> arrow keys to
- select the correct type of drive that is in your computer and press <ENTER>.
-
- 4. Quit DiskDupe by pressing <ESC> then press the <RIGHT> arrow key until the
- menu cursor is over the QUIT choice and then press <ENTER>. Your changes will
- be saved.
-
-
-
- STARTING DISKDUPE

-
- For instance to change the source disk, press the <RIGHT> arrow key once and
- press <ENTER>. Then press the <DOWN> key to select the B: drive.
-
- When you are ready to start duplicating disks, select DUPLICATE under the GO
- menu.
-
- To exit a menu or to stop duplicating disks, press the <ESC> key.
-
- After you are finished using DiskDupe, choose the QUIT option to exit
- DiskDupe and return to the DOS prompt.
-
-
-
- DISKDUPE FEATURES
-
-
- REGULAR COPIES
-
- Duplicate makes an exact copy of a disk. In its simplest form, you put the
- disk you want to duplicate in the Source drive, DiskDupe reads it and then
- writes out duplicates of this disk to the
-
-
- Destination drive. Since DiskDupe buffers the entire disk image in RAM memory
- and on your hard disk, the Source and Destination drives can be the same
- drive.
-
- RELAY
-
- If you want to make backup copies of a stack of floppy disks, the easiest way
- to do it is to use Relay. To use Relay, select RELAY from the SOURCE
- pull-down menu. Next, put a write protect tab on all of your master disks.
-
- To duplicate the disks, first insert a master disk with a write protect tab
- into the Destination drive. Choose DUPLICATE from the GO menu to read the
- next disk. Then insert a blank disk into the drive. Continue inserting as
- many blank disks as you want to make copies of. When you have made all the
- copies of this master disk you want, put the next master disk into the drive.
- DiskDupe will sense the write protect tab and realize that this is a new
- master disk. It will read it in like a new master disk. You can then continue
- the process for as long as you want. When you are finished making copies,
- press the <ESC> key.
-
- When using Relay, only the Destination drive will be used. Any Source drive
- previously set will be ignored.
-
- CAUTION: Be sure to put write protect tabs on all of your master disks. If
- you don't, they will be overwritten.
-
- FILE
-
- If you would like to store a disk image as a file on your hard disk, choose
- FILE from the Destination Menu and A: or B: as the source drive and then
- select Duplicate from the Go menu. This will create an image file on your
- hard disk which you can use to make duplicates without having to re-read the
- master disk.
-
- For instance, if you want to create a disk image file named DISK1, type
- DISK1.DDI. When you select Duplicate, the master disk will be read and the
- disk image file will be created. Image filenames all have the extension .DDI
- to distinguish them from other files.
-
- If you have previously created a disk image file you want to copy, select the
- filename of the disk from the Source, File menu. For instance, if you have a
- disk image file named DISK1.DDI, type in DISK1.DDI and the copies will be
- made from this disk image file. DiskDupe uses the file extension .DDI which
- stands for DiskDupe Image file. The program will accept any valid file
- created with any extension. The image file must have been created by
- DiskDupe.
-
- If you are not sure what the filename of the DDI file is, type
- *.DDI and press <ENTER>. A list will appear of all the available
-
-
-
- DDI files and you can use the arrow keys to select one. Press
- <ENTER> when the bar cursor is over the file you want to use.
-
- STANDBY DRIVE
-
- If you have two drives that support the same disk format (i.e two
- 5" drives or two 3" drives) you can choose the menu selection labeled A: & B:
- and called the Standby drive. Using it will save the time it normally takes
- to change the disk.
-
- The Standby drive works as follows: The master disk will be read from drive
- A:. While it is being read, you will put in a blank disk in drive B:. As soon
- as DiskDupe is finished reading from drive A:, it will start writing to the
- disk in drive B:. As it is writing to the disk in drive B:, you will put a
- blank disk in drive A:, then when the disk in drive B: is finished, DiskDupe
- will start writing to the disk in drive A:. This will continue until all the
- disks are copied.
-
- TYPE
-
- Set the copy type based on the type of the source disk. Normally this would
- be the same as the drive type. In the case of a 1.4Mb drive, however, you can
- set the copy type to either 3.5" 720k or 3.5" 1.4Mb disks depending on what
- type of disk you are trying to copy.
-
- NOTE: Although you can duplicate 360k disks in a 5.25", 1.2Mb drive, it is
- not recommended. The 5.25", 1.2Mb drives write a smaller track than usual so
- they do not make very good 360k duplicates.
-
- If you are doing a direct conversion, set the copy type to the type of the
- source disk. For instance, if you are copying a 5.25" 360k disk to a 3.5" 720
- disk, set the copy type to 5.25" 360k.
-
- If you are copying from an image file, be sure to set the copy type to the
- type of the image file.
-
- FORMAT OPTION
-
- The Format and Verify options are used to help speed up the disk duplicating
- time. If you always use new disks when making copies, go to FORMAT under the
- OPTIONS menu, press <ENTER> and then select ALWAYS. This will save a few
- seconds that DiskDupe normally takes to identify that a disk is blank and
- shift into Format mode. When Format is set to ALWAYS, a 360k disk will take
- less than 58 seconds to duplicate.
-
- If, however, you sometimes use disks that are pre-formatted, you can save a
- lot of time by setting FORMAT to ONLY IF NECESSARY.
-
-
- This will skip the format step on disks that have been pre- formatted. You
- can use this option even if you use a combination of pre-formatted and new
- disks because DiskDupe will still sense when a disk is new and automatically
- shift into format mode for that disk.
-
- VERIFY OPTION
-
- If you are confident that the disks you have pre-formatted have not been
- subsequently damaged, you can also set VERIFY to ONLY AFTER FORMAT. On
- pre-formatted disks this can cut the duplicating time on a 360k disk down to
- less than 16 seconds per disk.
-
- Be aware, however, that if the disks have been damaged after they were
- formatted (for instance, someone accidently touched the floppy disk surface),
- DiskDupe will probably not detect this damage if VERIFY is set to ONLY AFTER
- FORMAT. Duplicating times for pre-formatted disks when Verify is set to
- ALWAYS are still fairly quick.
-
- TEMP FILE
-
- The Temp File is the file on your hard disk where DiskDupe stores any part of
- the disk image that will not fit in memory. If you have at least 640k of RAM
- memory in your computer and are duplicating 360k disks, the entire disk will
- fit in memory and will not have to be buffered. If however, you are
- duplicating another type of disk or don't have as much memory, part of the
- disk will be buffered to this file.
-
- DiskDupe will only store the parts of the disk with data on it. For instance,
- if you are duplicating a disk that is only half full, only that half of the
- disk that has data on it will be stored.
-
- Note: If files have been erased from a disk, DiskDupe may be fooled into
- thinking that there is more data on the disk than there really is. To help
- DiskDupe work most efficiently, it is best to use a newly formatted disk as
- your master disk.
-
- AUTOMATIC DISK SENSING
-
- DiskDupe automatically senses when you change disks without having to touch
- the keyboard. This will speed up your duplication and also eliminate errors.
-
- To sense a disk change, DiskDupe needs to keep the drive on. So when DiskDupe
- alerts you, it is okay to change the disk even though the drive light is
- still on.
-
-
- DIRECT CONVERSIONS
-
- DiskDupe allows you to copy directly from a 5" disk to a 3" disk. Since it
- does this with a track by track copy, all volume labels, subdirectories and
- hidden files will be copied.
-
- You can also use this direct conversion feature to copy from any lower
- density disk to a higher density disk. That means you can copy a 3", 720k
- disk to a 5", 1.2Mb disk. However, you can't copy a higher density disk to a
- lower density disk, even if the higher density disk is almost empty.
-
- When copying from a lower density disk to a higher density disk, there will
- be some space left over on the higher density disk. For instance, when
- copying from a 5", 360k disk to a 3", 720k disk, only half of the 3" disk
- will be used.
-
- BAD DISK ALARM
-
- DiskDupe sounds an alarm when it encounters a bad disk and ask you to press
- the <ENTER> key. This alerts you that there is a bad disk to make sure you
- don't accidently put it in the good disk pile.
-
-
- MAXIMUM SPEED
-
- There are several ways you can optimize the speed of the copies made with
- DiskDupe.
-
- CLEAN MASTER
-
- DiskDupe works faster when the master disk is "clean". This means that the
- master disk was formatted before any files were copied to it.
-
- Using a clean disk, DiskDupe is able to sense which part of the disk has
- valid data on it and only duplicate that part of the disk. If you have a
- master disk which has had many different files copied to it and then erased,
- DiskDupe will have to duplicate the entire disk even though all of the disk
- might not contain real data.
-
- To make a clean master disk, first format a disk. Then use the DOS COPY
- command to copy the necessary files onto this newly formatted disk. This disk
- can now be used as your clean master disk.
-
-
- DUPLICATING TIMES
-
- The following table lists the maximum time it takes DiskDupe to duplicate a
- 360k disk. If the source disk is not completely full, the duplicating times
- will be faster than this.
-
- Disks copied in one hour using DiskDupe. All these times assume that it takes
- two seconds to change the disk.
-
-
- 360K 1.2Mb 720K 1.4MB
- ____________________________________________________________
- Blank Disks 62 38 32 32
- Pre-formatted/verify 106 65 55 55
- Pre-formatted 200 126 106 106
-
-
- Notice how much time you can save if you use pre-formatted disks. FORMAT AND
- VERIFY OPTIMIZATION
-
- 1. Pre-format the disks. This can be done by copying from a blank formatted
- disk. The disks will be formatted and verified and any bad disks will be
- rejected. You can format disks at any time that is convenient.
-
- 2. Use these pre-formatted disks later when you make copies. Make sure that
- FORMAT is set to ONLY IF NECESSARY and VERIFY is set to ONLY AFTER FORMAT on
- the SETUP menu.
-
- 3. If you are nervous about not verifying the disk after you write to it, set
- the VERIFY option to ALWAYS. This will increase the duplicating times but
- will re-verify the entire disk.
-
-
-
- BATCH FILES
-
- Most DiskDupe parameters can be entered from the DOS command line. This
- allows you to create DOS batch files to automate the use of DiskDupe.
-
-
- COMMAND LINE
-
- You can enter all the information on the DOS command line that you would
- normally have to enter by using the DiskDupe menus. Here is an example:
-
- DISKDUPE A: B: /C10 /DUP
-
- This will start DiskDupe with A: as the source drive and B: as the
- destination drive and will make 10 copies. The /DUP statementinstructs
- DiskDupe to start duplicating and then return to DOS without stopping at the
- menus. This is useful if you want to use DiskDupe in a batch file.
-
- The A: is the Source and can be a drive, a filename or the word RELAY.
-
- The B: is the Destination and can be a drive or a filename. To use a standby
- drive, use AB: like DISKDUPE D1 AB:
-
- The /C10 sets the number of copies to 10.
-
- The /C is called a switch. There are many different switches you can use. You
- can use as many or as few switches as you want. The next section lists all
- the switches.
-
- COMMAND LINE SWITCHES
-
- /C Allows you to set the number of copies
- Example: /C10 Set 10 copies.
- /DUP Starts duplicating without pausing at the menus and returns to DOS
- when finished.
- /FA Sets the option for formatting to ALWAYS.
- /FO Sets the option for formatting to ONLY WHEN NECESSARY.
- /VA Sets the option for verifying to ALWAYS.
- /VO Sets the option for verifying to ONLY AFTER FORMAT.
- /T Sets the Type of copy being made.
- 5X360 Specifies a 5.25" 360K copy (Low Density)
- 5X12 Specifies a 5.25" 1.2M copy (High Density)
- 3X720 Specifies a 3.5" 720K copy (Low density)
- 3X14 Specifies a 2.5" 1.4M copy (High Density) Example: /T5X360
- Specifies a 360k copy.
-
- /S Sets the type of installed drive.
- For drive, use one of the following:
- A:, B:
- For setup information, use one of the following:
- 5X360, 5X12, 3X720, 3X14, 5X600, 3X600 Example: /SA:5X12 Specifies
- the A: drive is a 1.2M High Density drive
-
- /TF Allows the user to set the option for the temporary file.
- Example: /TFDISKDUPE.TMP Sets the temporary file to DISKDUPE.TMP
-
-
-
- BATCH FILE EXAMPLE
-
- You can combine DiskDupe commands into DOS batch files to automate sequences
- of tasks.
-
- The following is a batch file that reads in a source disk and creates a disk
- image file and makes 10 duplicates.
-
- DISKDUPE B: DISK1 /DUP IF ERRORLEVEL 1 GOTO END DISKDUPE DISK1 B:
- /C10 /DUP :END
-
- Notice that you can test if there was a problem using the ERRORLEVEL command.
- An ERRORLEVEL of one or greater indicates that there was an error.
-
-
